The Valiance reimagines how architecture can support healing, stability, and belonging by bringing emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, and on-site services together within a single community. Developed through a partnership between Agate Housing and Services and Trellis Companies, the project creates a welcoming residential environment for women experiencing homelessness, trauma, and housing instability.
Extensive engagement with shelter guests, staff, service providers, and neighbors shaped a design centered on dignity, choice, and connection. A mix of single-room occupancy homes, shared suites, respite rooms, and small residential groupings fosters supportive relationships while respecting privacy and personal comfort. Daylight-filled gathering spaces, communal kitchens, views to nature, and quiet places for reflection contribute to a trauma-informed environment that supports recovery and long-term well-being.
Integrated offices, healthcare resources, workforce development spaces, and community services create a coordinated support network within the building. The result is a new model for community-centered housing that strengthens pathways to stability while demonstrating the transformative impact of thoughtful, compassionate design.
